Pilling happens when short fibers work loose from the fabric surface and tangle into small balls. It's the most common sign that your sheets are either made from low-quality material, being washed too aggressively, or both. The good news: pilling is preventable. The bad news: once it starts, the underlying cause usually means the sheets are on their way out. Here's what's happening and what you can do about it.
What Causes Pilling
Short-Staple Cotton
This is the #1 cause. Cotton fibers come in different lengths: short-staple, long-staple, and extra-long-staple. Short-staple fibers have more free ends, and those ends work loose from the weave with friction and washing. Once loose, they tangle into pills.
Long-staple and extra-long-staple cotton (like organic Pima or Egyptian cotton) has fewer free fiber ends, which means significantly less pilling. The fiber length is the single biggest predictor of whether sheets will pill.
This is also why thread count alone doesn't prevent pilling. A 1,000-thread-count sheet made from short-staple, multi-ply yarn can pill faster than a 400-thread-count sheet made from long-staple, single-ply yarn. The fiber quality matters more than the thread density.
Friction
Pilling requires friction. The sources: your body moving against the sheets during sleep, contact with rough skin (especially on feet and legs), and the tumbling action of the washing machine and dryer. Some friction is unavoidable, but harsh washing accelerates pilling dramatically.
Polyester Blends
Polyester fibers are strong enough that they don't break off. Instead, they pull loose from the weave and stay attached, creating pills that are harder to remove and more visible. Poly-cotton blends pill worse than 100% cotton for this reason. The polyester pills anchor themselves to the fabric.
Fabric Softener
Fabric softener coats fibers with a waxy layer that can actually increase friction between fiber surfaces. This seems counterintuitive, but the coating changes how fibers interact with each other, and in cotton and linen, it can accelerate pilling. Skip it.
How to Prevent Pilling
Buy quality fiber. This is the most effective prevention. Long-staple or extra-long-staple cotton, Tencel lyocell, and quality linen are all resistant to pilling. If you're buying 100% cotton, look for GOTS certification or specific fiber length claims (long-staple, Supima, Egyptian).
Wash gently. Cold water, gentle cycle. Hot water and aggressive cycles cause more fiber breakage and more friction. Wash sheets separately from towels and clothing with zippers, buttons, or rough textures.
Tumble dry low. High heat weakens fibers and increases the friction that causes pilling. Low heat or air drying is gentler.
Skip the fabric softener. Use white vinegar in the rinse cycle instead if you want softer sheets. It doesn't coat the fibers the way softener does.
Turn fitted sheets inside out before washing. This puts the sleep surface (where pilling is most visible) on the protected interior during the wash cycle.
Can You Fix Sheets That Are Already Pilling?
You can remove existing pills with a fabric shaver (a small battery-powered device that shaves the pills off the surface). This improves the look and feel temporarily. But if the underlying fiber quality is the problem, new pills will form. The shaver treats the symptom, not the cause.
If your sheets are pilling within the first few months, the fiber quality is likely the issue. No amount of careful washing will fix short-staple cotton. It's time to replace them with better sheets and consider the pilling a lesson in what to look for next time.
Which Fabrics Resist Pilling Best
Linen: Flax fibers are long and strong. Quality linen almost never pills. It actually gets smoother and softer over time.
Long-staple cotton (percale or sateen): Minimal pilling with proper care. The longer fibers stay anchored in the weave.
Tencel (cotton blend): The smooth fibers resist pilling, and the cotton blend provides structural support. Pure Tencel can pill, but blended Tencel is resistant.
Silk: Doesn't pill in the traditional sense. Silk fibers are continuous filaments, not short staples.
